R1: Double Win @ Donington
Double Win at Porsche Carrera Cup GB R1 – Donington
What an amazing first weekend racing in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB. The test day at Donington prior to the race weekend was dry and was useful seat time for me, because I had only the 4 official Porsche test days to get used to the car and 2 of those were wet!
Saturday was fine and sunny for qualifying and I was pleased to qualify in 8th place overall and fastest ProAM driver.
Sunday was a completely different day, rain on and off all day. Race 1 was held in the worst of all conditions, after rain mid morning the track was too damp for slicks and not really wet enough for wet tyres which makes the track slippery and causes the tyres to overheat. I made a good start making up a place to 7th which I maintained until a safety car on lap 18. I got a bit blocked on the restart and dropped a place and also lost the lead in the ProAM class but regained it a lap later to finish 6th overall and 1st in ProAM.
Race 2 was run in torrential conditions. I started 6th but lost a place on lap 1 as the pack sorted itself out. I made the place back 4 laps later but then clipped the chicane and lost the front splitter which meant that I struggled a bit turning the car into corners and my times dropped off just a few tenths of a second but enough to allow a couple of the Pro drivers behind me to get past dropping me to 8th which I maintained to the end to take my 2nd ProAM win.
So I came away from the weekend on maximum points towards the ProAM title and am looking forward to the next race in 2 weeks at Brands Hatch on Sunday 7th May.
